[moderate shelfwear, slight exposure of board at bottom front tip, a touch of fraying at the spine ends, mild dust-soiling to top of text block, one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase in ink at top of front endpaper; the jacket is heavily edgeworn (especially along front flapfold), with various small chips and tiny bits of paper loss at the corners, some horizontal creasing at the top and bottom edges of the front panel]. Mystery novel set among the "foreign colony" of Rio de Janeiro. The Canadian-born author's "authoritative knowledge of Brazil lends great color and depth" to the book, the first of her five mystery novels, all published during the 1940s; she was also a journalist and foreign correspondent who also wrote a number of nonfiction books about Brazil.
