by [Menu – Hotel St. Catherine (Santa Catalina, Calif.)]
Avalon, Santa Catalina Island, Calif, 1919. Menu (17.6 x 13.5 cm.), [2] pages. A menu for this historic resort hotel on Santa Catalina Island. The Hotel St. Catherine was born of a disastrous fire of 1915, during which the Banning home burnt to the ground, taking much of Avalon with it. The Banning family built the original Hotel on the site of the fire, opening on June 28, 1918, a bit more than a year before this menu was printed. Offerings include Queen Olives (Seville olives selected for larger size), Steamed Albacore, Celery Sauce, Fried Honeycomb Tripe a la Horley, and Fig Soufflé Pudding. The verso lists "Things to Do" including Glass Bottom Boat Trips – "see the submarine gardens"– , Auto Stage Scenic Rides, "Cornell's" Isthmus Barbecue, Saddle Horses, and more. The verso text is framed in an engraved image of sailboats in the sea around the island. Horizontal crease across the center of the leaf, otherwise fine.
