Full Calf
1879 · London
by Aeschylus. Commentary by F. A. Paley. Edited by George Long and Rev. A. J. MacLeane
London: Whittaker and Co.; George Bell and Sons, 1879. Fourth Edition. Full Calf. Lovely full tree calf binding, with gilt armorial centerpieces, different ones on the front and rear boards, and gilt devices on spine that while employing swags and vase shapes one associates with neo-Classical ornament, are certainly not run-of-the-mill for this sort of book. 8vo. 22 by 14.5 cm. xxxvii, [1], 692 pp. The plays are printed here in their original Greek, but with copious footnotes in English, printed in tiny letters and often consuming more than half the page. Front board is heavily rubbed with some starting. Rear board more moderately rubbed. Binding otherwise stunning. Text block tight and clean.
