Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece of the Large Clock Tower in Berne, engraved title-page in French with a large vignette, three full-page engraved plates, and an engraved map of the city and its environs by Bourgdorfer dated 1827. This copy bound in later vellum, with the original illustrated lithographic paper covers of two Founders of the City pasted to the vellum boards. Some light foxing to the text block, plates clean and a paper flaw in the lower right corner of the first three preliminary pages. Modern style exlibris designed with interlaced initial letters “SCE”, pasted on front pastedown.
This copy with a manuscript letter signed by Randolph Gerband and dated 25 September 1838 discussing Walthard’s book and the images of the City designed by G. Lori and engraved by Duttenhofer.
First edition. Highly detailed study of the origins and development of the city of Berne and its outskirts. Perfectly situated at the bend in the Aare River, the city expanded west and north as the population grew. City block after city block were constructed in orderly patterns and the city developed a cohesive and manner that is still evident today. It became a prosperous city with a good combination of agriculture and industry and by the mid-19th century took its place as one of the major territories of Europe. (1327) . (Inventory #: 1327)
