First edition of this rare guidebook to Ravenna, beginning with a brief history of the city followed by a listing of the monuments with details of their contents. The work is divided into two parts, one describes the central city and its academies, basilicas, cathedrals, and churches. The list continues with descriptions of the various historical columns that are around the city, as well as the city’s fortresses, libraries, mausoleums, palazzos, ports, schools, theaters, and cemeteries. Part two takes a similar approach and describes the monuments, churches, etc.. outside the city gates and the countryside surrounding the city. Each monument is given its own page which is divided into two column. In the left column the object and its location is described. In the second column there is a paragraph or two describing the importance of monument or painting, or church, or column and its history in relation to other similar objects that are described in the book.
The plates are described in the preface and bound at the end of the book. There is a plate with illustrations of some of the inscriptions that are essential to the history of the city; a plan of the Baptistry; and a plan of the Temple of San Vitale.Â
Rare:Â OCLC lists just one copy in the US at the Frick Library; NUC adds copies at Yale, Boston Public, UCLA, and Illinois.
