1960 · London
by White, Gwen
London: John Murray, 1960. Early edition of graphic designer Gwen White’s first “lift-up book,” an ingenious guide to drawing in perspective, first published in 1954. Each of White’s full-page color illustrations is backed with a black-and-white geometric diagram showing how the illustration’s perspective is achieved: when each leaf of the book is held up to the light, the illustration and its underlying diagram are superimposed. “As most people interested in Art understand things in a visual way, there are as few words as possible.” A very good copy of an innovative and increasingly elusive book. Oblong quarto, measuring 10.25 x 8 inches: [4], 7-77, [1], inclusive of endpapers. Original red cloth lettered in white, color pictorial endpapers, original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket. Color lithographed illustrations throughout text. Boards slightly bowed, several short closed tears to jacket, small smudge to base of front panel.
