GEORGE PEABODY (1795-1869). Peabody was an American financier and philanthropist.ALS. 1pg. 5 x 7. May 30, 1868. 80 Eaton Square. An autograph letter signed George Peabody to Sir James Anderson (1824-1893); Anderson is best remembered for helming the SS Great Eastern that assisted Cyrus Field in laying the Transatlantic telegraph cable. Peabody wrote: While admitting that Mr. Field is fully entitled to all the honors he has received, and those your propose to pay him on the 1st July for his eminent services in connection with the Atlantic cable, my peculiar situation obliges me to decline the request contained in your private note.
