SAMUEL L. CLEMENS (1835-1910). Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was an American novelist and humorist. Among his best-known novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court. The last twenty years of Clemens life were quite unhappy for many reasons, among them serious financial problems and deaths of close family members, including his wife and a favorite daughter.Ephemera. 2pg. 1905. New York City. Two pieces of ephemera from Mark Twains seventieth birthday celebration in 1905:a)A menu from the 1905 dinner held at Delmonicos. Offerings included oysters, filets of kingfish, quail, salad and a range of desserts. The menu is printed on one side with caricatures of Twain as a printer, riverboat pilot, miner, journalist, traveler and lecturer. The other side has a photograph of Twain, his SLC monogram, and images of people and animals (including the Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County) toasting the writer. There is a vertical fold and if is in fine condition otherwise.b)A large booklet entitled Mark Twains 70th Birthday Souvenir of Its Celebration published by Harpers Weekly. A number of famous writers contributed to this, including Richard Watson Gilder, George Washington Cable and Andrew Carnegie. The back of the book contains photographs of the evenings festivities, including Twain at a dinner table with other prominent people. The front cover has soiling and is close to being fully detached from the rest of the book. The overall condition is very good. (Inventory #: 6620)
