first edition Spiral bound
1952 · San Francisco
by Thurman, Sue Bailey
San Francisco: Acme Publishing Company, 1952. First Edition. Spiral bound. Very good. The second major history of African American settlers in the Golden State, preceded by Delilah Beasley's The Negro Trail-Blazers of California (1919). Thurman (1903-96) based this work on a series of eight articles she wrote in the San Francisco Sun-Reporter, and is credited with renewing academic interest about the topic. Octavo: [viii], 70 pp. with textual photographs. Spiral bound in the original printed yellow paper wrappers. Some faint staining and smudging to the wrappers; otherwise very good. (Inventory #: 78699)
