1734 · In Firenze
by Soderini, Giovanvettorio
In Firenze: Appresso Domenico Maria Manni, 1734. 4to. 225 x 160 mm., [8 ¾ x 6 ¼ inches]. xx, 135 pp. Printed on thick paper. Bound in contemporary mottled vellum, gilt spine, leather label; some worming damage to the vellum boards, preliminary leaves with some foxing; otherwise sound and not unattractive.
Authoritative edition, originally published in 1600, followed by three 17th century editions and this edition of 1734. This edition was accurately edited by Domenico Maria Manni based on the original publication. Manni provides valuable biographical information on Soderini’s life and discusses the editions of his work that were published in the 17th century. Soderini was exiled from Florence by the de’Medici for conspiracy against the family and spent his later years in the Tuscan Hills studying agricultural techniques and methods for improving crop yield, especially as it related to the cultivation of wine. The 1734 edition was approved by the Accademia della Crusca and was the one used by the Società Tipografia de Classici Italiani for the edition it published in 1806.
Of this 1734 edition of Soderini’s Trattato, Gamba writes,
“We owe this beautiful and accurate reprint to Domenico Maria Manni, in which Davanzati’s Coltivazione and Giacchini’s Lettera have been omitted, but instead Manni’s Notizie collected around the author’s life have been inserted.”
OCLCcites six copies in America, four of which are on the West Coast.
