Boston: Printed for Private Circulation, 1886. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Octavo. 24pp. Blue cloth stamped in gilt. Illustrated with a silhouette frontispiece portrait of Ann Phillips, and reproducing a photograph of her residence. Contemporary gift inscription from Mrs. Holbrook to Mrs. Alvord(?). Scattered foxing throughout, small scratch on front board, very good. Ann Phillips became active in the abolitionist movement at an early age, through her family's connection with William Lloyd Garrison. She and her husband, Wendell Phillips, were appointed as delegates to the World Anti-Slavery Convention by the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. She was denied admission to the Convention because she was a women, as were Lucretia Mott, Mary Grew and other female delegates. Her friends Lucy Stone and Julia Ward Howe spoke at her memorial, there remarks are referred to here, although not quoted.
