San Francisco: The Book Club of California, 1999. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. One of 450 copies, quarto size, 324 pp., with prospectus and invitation to publication party, inscribed by Jack Stauffacher in the year of publication. The Greenwood Press, a highly regarded San Francisco-based press run by the incomparable Jack Stauffacher (1920-2017), produced a myriad of fine press books featuring Stauffacher's masterful printing and typographic design; this bibliography covers the history of the Press over the nearly seventy years of its existence, and includes essays and letters between Stauffacher and the numerous people he worked with during his long and illustrious career.
This copy from the library of the celebrated teacher of the history of printing and publishing, Professor Robert D. Harlan (1929-2014). Jack Stauffacher inscribed the volume to Professor Harlan on the front free endpaper: "To Robert / your support & / friendship, have / made this book / possible - / Jack / 22 July 1999 / San Francisco". Loosely laid into the book are the prospectus, a postcard invitation to the launch party at The Book Club of California, another invitation to attend a "reception & book signing" at The Bonnafont Gallery, and the order form envelope.
___DESCRIPTION: Full green cloth, white paper spine label with red and black lettering, frontispiece a black-and-white photograph of the Greenwood tree in San Mateo, California, title page in red and black, black-and-white photographs throughout; Cycles types, Mohawk Superfine paper, quarto size (10.25" by 8.25"), pagination: [1-8] 9-323 [1 colophon], one of 450 copies, unnumbered, inscribed by Jack Stauffacher on the FFEP as described above (please note that in the photograph of the inscription, the writing is so light it's difficult to for the camera to see). In a white paper dust jacket with a large letter "G" printed in red on the front panel, and red and black lettering on the spine; the dust jacket is unclipped and unpriced. The prospectus is a single sheet folded once to four pages, the invitation to the BCC book launch letterpress printed on cardstock, the invitation to the reception and book signing party a single sheet folded twice to four pages, and the order form being simply a small envelope printed with the pertinent information.
___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The dust jacket is fine overall, unclipped, clean, with only extremely light wear. The prospectus near fine, clean, with a shallow horizontal crease at the top edges, both invitations and the order envelope fine, clean and without wear.
