Manchester (U.K.): Carcanet Press Ltd.. Fine in Near Fine dj. 1986 (c.1977). 1st U.K. edition. Hardcover. [nice copy, no discernible wear to book; jacket shows just a trace of surface handling wear]. The acclaimed Ukranian-born Brazilian writer's final novel, about an impoverished orphan girl, published just before she entered the hospital for what was to become her terminal illness in 1977. This was the first of two English translations of the novel, and includes an Afterword by the translator. (The second was done by Benjamin Moser in 2012.) It was adapted into a 1985 Brazilian film, A HORA DA ESTRELA (also the original Portuguese title of the book). Apparently a review copy, with a publisher's postcard laid in; this edition is considerably less common than the 1992 New Directions edition of the same translation. . (Inventory #: 15958)
