1812 · Mexico City
by [Mexico]. [War of Independence]
Mexico City: Por Don Manuel Antonio Valdes Impresor de Cámara de S.M., 1812. About very good.. 20pp., plus engraved plate. Small quarto. Disbound. Minor dampstaining, light toning. A brief but grandiose celebration of and pledge of loyalty to the new Spanish Constitution of 1812, offered by the garrison of Mexico City. The new form of government was in great part an attempt to assuage colonial discontent, and among other things promised colonies representation in the Spanish Cortes. The author riffs on the garrison's motto of "Amor Lealtad y Union" and offers several verses in praise of each as well as one for the nation. An engraving of the coat of arms, also bearing the motto, is tipped in between the title page and first leaf of text. An interesting representation of reaction to the promulgation of the new constitution in Mexico. OCLC lists three copies in U.S. institutions, at Yale, Berkeley, and the University of Texas.
